Santa Clara Family Health Plan Receives State Recognition for Health Care Quality

Santa Clara Family Health Plan (SCFHP) received the 2015 Outstanding Performance Award for medium-scale Medi-Cal managed care plans in California from the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Only three outstanding performance awards were given by DHCS—one each for small, medium, and large-scale Medi-Cal managed care plans. The award recognizes SCFHP’s achievements in the improvement of health care quality and population health as measured by indicators that comprise the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS). Award recipients were selected for their performance on 22 distinct HEDIS measures.

“As a local, public safety net health plan, this is a huge accomplishment. Out of all the plans in the state with similar Medi-Cal enrollment, including commercial plans, SCFHP rose to the top,” said Christine Tomcala, SCFHP CEO. “This award recognizes our commitment to providing residents of our county with access to quality, affordable health care. It also is a testament to the exceptional quality of care delivered by our providers.”

HEDIS is a tool developed by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and is the widely accepted standard for measuring health plan quality. Altogether, HEDIS consists of 81 measures across five aspects of health care and its delivery. This standardized set of performance measures allows for comparison across health plans.

“SCFHP, in partnership with our providers, has undertaken several strategic initiatives to improve the quality of care for our members in critical areas such as cancer screening, childhood vaccinations, tobacco cessation, and diabetes prevention. The results of these initiatives are reflected in our strong HEDIS scores and in this award,” said Jeff Robertson, SCFHP Chief Medical Officer. “We are honored to receive this recognition of our ongoing work to keep our members healthy.”

SCFHP is a local, not-for-profit health plan serving over 260,000 members in Santa Clara County through its Medi-Cal, Cal MediConnect, and Healthy Kids programs.
